Proper Care and Maintenance of Your Metro Steel Doors Products

General Cleaning

Your doors and windows should be cleaned regularly with a solution of 1 teaspoon of baby shampoo or 1 ½ cups of vinegar to 1 gallon of water. Apply pressure with a sponge or soft brush horizontally, then vertically, and rinse promptly. Do not allow the solution to dry on the surface you are cleaning. Dry the surface with a lint-free cloth. If you are cleaning your windows, dry the window frame and sill with a separate cloth. Be sure to follow all safety precautions for any materials you are using, especially any flammable or corrosive solvents.

Maintenance and Replacement of Parts

Regular inspection and maintenance of the weather strip on your windows and doors can save you money by reducing your energy costs and preventing water damage from leakage. If your weather strip is loose, apply a small quantity of super glue and press firmly. If your weather strip is damaged and needs to be replaced, contact us for replacement instructions. You will also need to lubricate the hinges on your products. We recommend doing this annually with a silicone-based lubricant to keep your hinges from malfunctioning.

If you live in a coastal area or an area with high humidity, Metro Steel Doors recommends quarterly inspection and maintenance. Our product warranties do not cover damage from salt or other corrosive substances.

Refinishing Your Windows and Doors

To refinish your window or door, first remove any hardware. Sand your surface to prepare it for priming and painting. When selecting a primer, look for an oil-based product to use on your steel. After your surface is primed, you can go over it with your paint. Ask your local paint supplier for paints that are designed to be used on metal. To get the best results, we recommend painting the edges of your door first, then the panels. When the paint is completely dry, reinstall the hardware and enjoy your newly finished window or door,

Following these instructions for basic cleaning and maintenance can extend your life of your windows and doors. Find more detailed instructions here and contact us with any questions about proper care of your surfaces.
